Main Spending Areas As % Of GDP



Social Security is the largest spending programme, and has doubled over 40 years. But NHS spending is growing faster.

Notice social security spending has fell since Labour come in.

Does the figure for Social Security spending include benefits paid via the "tax credits" system that is, I believe, accounted for under a different department? If not, what would the full figure look like?

... and it would help if the education figure were weighted for the change in the number of schoolchildren. Also, the budget for education is so vast and complex that there's plenty of room to hide all kinds of skulduggery.
